Sorcerers and Secretaries Vol. 1 [Amy Kim Ganter]

Amy Kim Ganter. Sorcerers and Secretaries [Vol. 1]
TokyoPop Inc., 2006
YA, Realistic Fiction, Graphic Novel

Summary
Nicole is unhappy with her life. She’s unhappy at school. She’s unhappy at work. Nicole is only happy when she is dreaming of and imagining her fantasy world. She records her stories about the sorcerer, Ellon, who must go on a quest to save his soul after his familiar betrays him, in her dream journal.

Josh wants to date Nicole, but she keeps shutting him down because he becomes a bumbling fool around her. Under the guidance of his roommate, he practices his moves by collecting girl’s phone numbers, but he really only cares about Nicole. However, Nicole now feels that she would just be another notch on his belt, instead of someone special.

Reactions
For the most part I enjoyed this book. I didn’t like Josh very much, despite his playboy ways being an act. He liked Nicole, but that didn’t stop him from flirting with every girl that looked his way. But girls will appreciate how foolish he gets when he talks to Nicole. My favorite parts were Nicole’s fantasy world where Ellon had to go on the quest. Nicole’s unhappiness due to loneliness and not pursuing her dreams was infinitely relatable.
