Charlie Bone and the Hidden King by Jenny NimmoChildren of the Red King Book 5
2006. Orchard Books (Scholastic). 441 pgs.
Snow filled the air; thick and fast it heaped itself upon the sleeping city, almost as though it were trying to keep it safe. A blanket of down to smother the wickedness that someone was determined to let loose.
The book opens to a scene of terror; someone is trying to find a powerful item. They succeed and awaken the shadow behind the Red King. Charlie’s grandmother eats magicked food and freezes. Charlie must discover who is awakened and who awakened him. His mother is enchanted and begins to forget Lyell. Charlie also makes new friends when he goes off to search for the city’s animals that left when the item was found. The children of the Red King must band together to awaken his spirit in order to defeat the shadow and save Charlie’s family.
I enjoyed this Charlie Bone book as much as I enjoyed the others. I love the plot line and the stories are well driven. I just don’t think they are well written. Everything just kind of happens by luck. There are also infinite characters to keep straight in your mind. Overall, it was okay. I’m planning to finish the series but these books don’t stick in my memory very long and don’t excite me all that much.
