Three Cheers for Pooh

Three Cheers for Pooh: The Best Bear in all the World by Brian Sibley

2001. Dutton Children's Books. 120 pgs.
Teen: Nonfiction, Biography

3 Cheers for Pooh!
(For who?) For Pooh!
(Why what did he do?)
I thought you knew..

A biography of the author of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. We learn about the Milne family and the origin of Winnie the Pooh’s name (a swan and a bear). A.A. Milne was already a successful writer before he wrote about Pooh, as Shepard was already a successful illustrator. Each character in the stories was first a stuffed animal of Christopher Robin’s before it participated in the stories. We find out how A.A. Milne was resentful about being labeled a children’s author and Christopher Robin resented his father for making him a famous character.
I love, love, love Winnie-the-Pooh. I think it is safe to say that he is my most beloved childhood character. From the books to the movies to the TV shows. (I hate the new Disney channel Winnie the Pooh- they ruined him!) Of course it was disappointing to find out how much “resentment” went on in the Milne household. But I can’t help but love any book that talks about Pooh. I was the most interested in how each character was created- given a personality and then a look by Shepard. I can’t wait to reread my Pooh books!
