Kilmeny of the Orchard [Lucy Maud Montgomery]

Lucy Maud Montgomery. Kilmeny of the Orchard
Random House Publishing, 1910.
Historical Fiction. YA.

The sunshine of a day in early spring, honey pale and honey sweet, was showering over the red brick buildings of Queenslea College and the grounds about them, throwing through the bare, budding maples and elms, delicate, evasive etchings of gold and brown on the paths, and coaxing into life the daffodils that were peering greenly and perkily up under the windows of the co-eds' dressing room.

Reaction
I loved this book when I was younger. I can't say the same thing now. It's a love story about a man who falls in love with a mute woman. I still like Kilmeny, she's innocent and good and strong. But Eric? How arrogant can one guy be? He's handsome and rich and all that good stuff, which is fine, but he KNOWS it. Eric acts like it's obvious that Kilmeny will love him and completely dismisses the jealousy of another guy. I love Montgomery's books but this is one that did not translate well to me from childhood to adulthood. I still enjoyed the plot line, it's simple and sweet, but the "hero" of the story was full of himself.
